Zimmermann PV-Steel Group (ZIM, Germany) and their long-term developer partner, BayWa r.e., (BayWa, Germany) have installed 210 MW of FPV, including the Sellingen project in the Netherlands which is the largest FPV system outside of Asia. ZIM and BayWa will build a 5 MW FPV pilot in the Netherlands, to extend their FPV design for more waterbodies while advancing on all SuRE fronts. BayWa has a pipeline of more than 2 GW of FPV projects.

The main objective of ZIM within the SuRE project is to expand their market by enabling deployments in more challenging conditions. Their current large-scale FPV installations are primarily located on freshwater inland bodies, such as water reservoirs and quarry ponds.

Components and standard design practices will be improved and updated based on measurements and model advancements developed within SuRE, to adapt to more significant wave heights of 1.5 to 2 meters, also allowing operations in more corrosive environments. ZIM and BayWa will build a 5 MW pilot plant in the second half of the SuRE project to test these new designs and components. The pilot project will incorporate recent developments specific to ZIM Float technology, as well as generalizable activities in Sustainability, Reliability, and Efficiency.

The pilot site, located in the Netherlands, will also be used for pre-, mid- , and post-installation studies on water quality, shoreline effects, and ecology. Once constructed, the pilot site will serve as a platform with a commitment to future access for additional studies. With the pilot built midway through the project period, a report on one annual operational cycle will be provided before the end of the project.
